ATV Maintenance Tips
Keeping your ATV well maintained is the best way to ensure that it will perform at its best for years to come. Many basic ATV maintenance tasks are simple enough to perform yourself if you have the correct tools. Review Your Owner’s Manual
The best source of information about how best to maintain your ATV is and always will be the owner’s manual. It contains all kinds of invaluable information, including when to schedule maintenance and what kinds of products to use. Be sure to consult your owner’s manual before attempting any ATV maintenance.
Oil
Oil plays an important role in ensuring that your ATV’s internal components glide against each other instead of grinding together and damaging each other. That’s why you should change your ATV’s oil regularly. The oil itself also needs to be inspected. If the oil has become black and sludgy, that means it can no longer do its job. If it feels gritty to the touch, that means that engine parts are grinding together and damaging each other.
Changing the Filters
Filters keep harmful particulates out of your ATV’s engine. Swap out your oil filters every time you change your oil. Air filters should be changed every three to four oil changes. Fuel filters last a long time, but you should still check yours every once in a while, especially if your quad is an older model.
Spark Plugs
Spark plugs provide the initial “spark” that gets your engine going. If your ATV is slow to turn over, check the spark plug. You can access the spark plugs by disconnecting the battery, removing the engine cover, and taking out the plug using a spark plug wrench. The plug casing should be fully intact, with clean and dry metal gaps. Replace your spark plug whenever it stops working or as often as your owner’s manual recommends.
